Dev Update 3/8: API One-Click Install

$

Greetings!

Today, I am so exited to share our newest update coming soon to our main site and available now on our Dev Server - API One-Click Install.

Our Developers have pushed out an update to our Development Server for the API system which includes a limited number of scripts and we need your help testing this new feature!

image

You’ll now find a new tab in your API menu called “Script Library” that will have a vetted list of pre-approved API Scripts, similar to the list of community Character Sheets.

Script Authors, if you’re interested in having your scripts added to the approved script list, please see our Dev Update post on the forums for more information!

Interested in helping? Pro users can head over to the Development Server now to test this exciting new feature!

As always, thank you for your feedback and support!

Update 4/5: API One-Click Install, New API Architecture, Character Sheet Zooming, & More!

$

0

Today, we’ve launched a major update to Roll20′s API and we are excited to share those details below!

API One-Click Install

The API is one of our best Pro-level features, but it has always required at least some amount of familiarity with coding and scripting to use it… until now!

Starting today, all Pro users have access to a library of one-click install scripts that don’t require any additional setup or the copying and pasting of code.

Head to the Settings dropdown from your Game Details page and select the API Scripts option to find a new tab in your API menu called “Script Library” - this list contains a vetted group of pre-approved API Scripts, similar to the list of community Character Sheets.

Scripts added to your game will automatically determine what dependencies and conflicts they may have and will notify you accordingly.

After you select a script from the “Script Library” you can choose to “Add Script” to save the script as is or “Import” it as a custom script if you really want to get in and make some changes!

These are scripts that have been generously contributed by our community members and when scripts are added using the “Add Script” option, they will update for you as script authors release new versions.

For more details, including how Script Authors can have their scripts added to the approved “Script Library” please head to the full update thread on the forums.

New API Architecture

We have completely re-done the way that the API server architecture works behind the scenes. Our previous method was based around spawning lots of individual node processes, however they weren’t very well contained and could easily interfere with each other, leading to other issues such as the dreaded “PORT IN USE” error.

We’ve now redone this backend to take advantage of Docker containers, a fantastic new-ish technology which allows us to run each API sandbox in its own “Virtual Machine container”. These containers are completely separate from each other, and have much better resource tracking and sharing capabilities.

Character Sheet & Handout Zooming

A “Zoom” button has been added to the Character Sheet and Handout dialog boxes. This allows you to easily zoom in or out of the sheet/handout to make the text and images larger or smaller.

Infinite Deck Fixes

We’ve upgraded our support for using Infinite Decks. You’ll now see some additional options that allow you to specify how you want the deck to behave and “Recalling” cards from a tabletop or player’s hand when using an infinite deck now works correctly instead of only recalling some of the cards.

For all of the information on this newest update or to share any bugs, please head to our forums and check out the full update thread from Riley!

Thank you for your continued support, we hope to see you at Roll20CON!

[Summary] Share Your Favorite Rollable Tables!

A few week’s ago we asked our forum users to share some of their favorite ways to use Rollable Tables. This customizable feature allows for a single item to be randomly chosen from collection of several. Though commonly used for custom dice or any other list of items that may need to be “rolled” - many of our users have found alternative ways to use this tool.

I have used rollable tables to set up different tokens for shapeshifting creatures. - jbokcrusade

You can create a Rollable Table Token to change the appearance of shapeshifters or differently equipped gear.

They’re a great way to set up random encounter maps. -The Aaron

Use a Rollable Table Token on the map layer to choose a new area for each random encounter, simply right click and choose the next map.

There are some awesome API Scripts out there that really make Rollable Tables shine. - Silvyre

Click the forum link above to see what Silvyre recommends and check out our API: Introduction wiki to see how to get started.

[The way we use Rollable Tables] is specific to my group’s Homebrew World and AD&D game. - Gold

Roll20′s system agnostic approach invokes creativity and we love seeing the features we’ve release used in different ways by our community. Please visit our original forum thread to share your favorite ways to use this tool.

Bonus! Head to the thread now to see how to user plexsoup turned a pair of reflecting eyes into an animal using Rollable Tables!

The Orr Group Industry Report: Q1 2016

2016 is off to a great start, and we’re ready to take a look at the data for the first quarter of The Orr Group Industry Report. You can get a first glance the overview, below:

image

We keep knocking our Player Sample Size out of the park, and this quarter continues that trend with an increase of more than 9,000! Obviously we’re pleased as punch to see our community continue to grow, so we won’t waste time looking this gift horse in the mouth.

Digging into the games played on our site, Dungeon & Dragons 5th Edition is still the most-played system on Roll20. This quarter, the number of games increased by an additional 4.05%, meaning that 35.44% of all Roll20 games are using 5th Edition. This isn’t a big surprise to us, especially after the release of the SRD in January. While activity in Pathfinder, 3.5 Edition, and 4th Edition decreased ever so slightly, activity in those systems is holding pretty steady, so it seems as though the transition of players from other games to 5th Edition may be slacking off.

Check out the full report from Q1 2016, below:

image

We saw an uptick in Star Wars systems this quarter, which we suspect was influenced by RollPlay’s recent Star Wars one-shots, “Age of Rebellion” in December and “Balance of Power” in March. World of Darkness also performed well, hopefully due to our user base enjoying Roll20’s Mage campaign! In addition, Mouse Guard RPG games have doubled since Q4 of 2015, which we attribute to both the release of the second edition of Mouse Guard, as well as Roll20’s own one-shot of the game in January.

Roll20 is continuing our efforts to make our site more accessible for non-English speakers. We were glad to see enough activity in foreign-language games Tormenta (Brazilian) and Chroniques Oubliées (French) to validate adding these titles to the Orr Group Industry Report. We’ll continue tracking these going forward.

There are a few more new titles in this quarter’s report, which we gave special recognition due to increased activity in their game-specific character sheets. All Flesh Must Be Eaten is a survival horror game, while Paranoia is a darkly humorous dystopian RPG. It’s great to see more indie RPGs being used on Roll20!

Finally, Tavern Tales is a recently-funded Kickstarter RPG that is currently in open beta. We’re happy to see people have begun playing this new indie game on Roll20!

A Quick Note About The Orr Group Industry Report:
We pull our data from two locations within Roll20 member profiles. Player numbers are drawn from the “Enjoys Playing” and “Seeks Group For” sections, while Game numbers come from the “My Campaigns” section. Our percentages can total more than 100%, particularly Player numbers, since each player will list their interest in multiple games. The report is meant to be a representative sample, and the game listings are curated by Roll20 staff. For more details about how our report works, you can always look back at our in-depth explanation.

Update! New Translation Tools Added & Art Library Changes Coming Soon.

Greetings gamers! Last year, we began seeking translators to help us bring Roll20 to as many people as possible and we are very excited to share the evolution of this process.

New Translation Tools with Character Sheet Functionality!

On May 17th, our developers pushed out an update that added new tools from CrowdIn to the site. This new and more robust translation software is designed to not only make it easier to translate the site itself, but to help give context to our translators.

With the addition of CrowdIn, we are excited to announce that these tools are also compatible with community-created Character Sheets. Sheet Authors can now use the Character Sheet i18n tools to design their sheets, making them available for our community of translators.

Find more information on these new tools, including advice for Sheet Authors in the full changelog.

Interested in volunteering to translate? Email team@roll20.net to help!

What’s Next?

On the development side, our team is busy with a major overhaul to our art library system. Our goal on this next update, is to provide a cleaner Art Library interface, along with some additional functionality to improve some of the major issues that currently exist.

Details on these changes will hit the Pro Forums first, so consider becoming a supporter for a first look or keep an eye on this blog for more details soon.

Our team is also very busy planning our first ever celebration of you! Roll20CON is just about 2 weeks away, so if you have not planned a game for June 3rd, head to our LFG to find one now or start something new!

Special “Prop” and “Occurrence” Theme for Games!

During Roll20CON, we encourage the use of a “Prop” and/or “Occurrence” in your games. We think this will be a fun way to unite the many gaming experiences happening in our interface during the event. Similar to the way many film 24-hour festivals will use a common prop, occurrence, and/or line of dialogue.

PROP: a spotted handkerchief. Try to incorporate this visual element into your games and share it on social media! Don’t for get to use the hashtag #Roll20CON - can you spot the Prop in this blog?

OCCURRENCE: try and defeat a bully without violence. Our challenge to players during Roll20CON is to try to de-escalate a situation with their wits. Since we are benefiting Cybersmile, it only seemed fitting to see if we could take a moment in our games to promote the idea of rising above.

Compendium Updated for SRD 5.1 & Art Library Changes Now on Dev

Greetings Roll20 Community!

Thank you again to all who celebrated Roll20CON with us earlier this month. We were so impressed with your enthusiasm, dedication to play, and willingness to do some good by contributing to Cybersmile, so once again a big thanks to all.

Compendium Updated!

During all of the Roll20CON hubbub, our Compendium Editors Jeff & Michael were busy helping us update the SRD5 Compendium. These amazing volunteers ran through the new System Reference Document from Wizards of the Coast, updating when necessary, including changes/additions to spells, magic items, monsters, and more.

If you are not familiar with the Roll20 SRD5 Compendium or its functionality, you’ll find more information on our blog or wiki.

Now on Dev!

We also wanted to share some exciting details on our next big update for those of you who are not following along on the Pro forums… it’s an overhaul to the image library!

image

Pro Users can view all of the details on our Pro Forum or head to the Dev Server to test now. Here’s what you can expect from the changes:

Here’s what to expect:

  • Folder structure for your library, nestable down to five levels just like the journal folders.
  • Quick access to your purchased content in an organized fashion.
  • Make copies of your purchased and uploaded assets as many times as you want to sort and organize in your folder structure to best suit your needs.
  • Preview assets by mousing over them.
  • Pop-out folder view for mass tagging, deleting, and moving of assets from folder to folder.

Things you can expect to do:

  • Copy entire sets or individual assets from your purchased Premium Assets to your library for organization and extra search tagging.
  • Alphabetically sort folders.
  • Filter Recent Uploads to only show assets that aren’t already in Your Library.
  • Bulk Delete images from your Recent Uploads to free up Library space. (Warning, this can’t be undone)
  • Select all items in a folder and add or remove a tag from each.
  • Search Your Library, the Marketplace, and the Web with a single search.
image

Important Note to our Pros! (READ THIS CAREFULLY)

Your image library is shared between both Dev and Main. Although this new feature is on the Dev Server, you are actually organizing and modifying your ACTUAL IMAGE LIBRARY on Main. Please keep in mind that if you delete an upload, you are really deleting it! That means if it is used in a game on Main it will stop working! So be sure that you don’t delete things you might want to keep around just because you are on Dev.

Also note that you may see some tags show up on your Marketplace library on Main that look like this: “f|-abc123”. Just ignore those, once this goes live they will be correctly hidden from view. They are just an internal marker we use to keep track of things.

Pros can test the new Image Library now on the Dev server and leave feedback in the full update thread from Steve.

Have fun and happy gaming!

This morning on Twitch, Roll20′s GM-in-Residence Adam Koebel announced that we’re bringing D&D Adventurers League content to the Roll20 Twitch stream!

Adventurers League is the ongoing official organized play campaign for Dungeons & Dragons, using 5E and set in the Forgotten Realms. For more information about Adventurers League, check out their site.

Our Twitch content will feature the maps and actual adventures available for download on the Adventurers League site – allowing you to recreate these stories with your own group! Adam Koebel will also provide GM Workshop tutorials on Roll20′s Twitch channel. You can learn how to use features such as Dynamic Lighting and the SRD Compendium to create your own Adventurers League campaigns on Roll20.

Until this point, Adventurers League has been primarily geared towards in-person gaming sessions. It’s our shared hope that by embracing Roll20 and playing online, more people can experience these awesome storylines and get gaming!

Watch the full announcement here:

This Roll20 Presents Twitch series will play through an entire season of Adventurers League content, which includes about 60 hours worth of story. The new series will begin on July 7 and will use the Tyranny of Dragons storyline. Tune in next week (Thursday at 11am Pacific on twitch.tv/roll20app) for the first episode!

Art Library Rework Update Now on the Main Site!

$
0
0

This week our Devs have rolled out a new update to Your Library. This revamp provides better organizational tools, supports mass editing of assets, and lays the groundwork for better integration down the road.

You’ll now find your Premium Assets, including Purchases, Pro & Free Sets - listed in your library along with a My Library section that includes Recent Uploads, a new Upload button, and Folders with a pop-out option for mass tagging, deleting, and moving of assets from folder to folder!

You can also now hover your mouse over an asset to preview the image and view an organizational handle. Grab this handle to reorganize within Your Library or use it to drag and drop items onto the table.

Important Note on Recent Uploads (READ THIS CAREFULLY)

Your Recent Uploads list acts as the primary save source for all of Your Library. This means that if you delete a Recent Upload, you are really deleting it! You can copy and delete things as often as you want in your folder structure but if you delete it from Recent Uploads the asset will be gone for good.

Wanna check your Quota before deleting Recent Uploads? Your Quota is listed under Account Type & Subscription on your profile.

Tagging is also now easier - you can edit tags by clicking on the asset and opening the pop-out folder view.

Clicking on the asset’s tags and adding, editing, or removing them there. You can also mass add or delete tags to everything in a folder all from inside the app.

This change is a major one, so we are still taking feedback into consideration and will be making a few adjustments, as well as adding some more options regarding the actual layout/functionality of the new system. To follow along, share bugs, or provide feedback, please see the Update Thread on the forums.

Enjoy & happy gaming!

Roll20 is Now an Officially Licensed Partner with Wizards of the Coast.

Greetings to our fabulous community! I have the honor of sharing some very exciting news with you today…

Wizards of the Coast has signed a licensing deal to distribute Dungeons & Dragons content via Roll20!

This marks the first licensed collaboration between our two companies, which has been a major goal for Roll20 since our launch in 2012.

While Roll20 was designed to play nearly any tabletop game, the spark that pushed us to start the product was Dungeons & Dragons. Our very name, ‘Roll20’ comes from the concept of a ‘critical hit’ as popularized by D&D. For us, D&D represents an evergreen part of our gaming lives, and to be officially working with its creators and caretakers certainly feels like we’ve made a winning roll. -Riley Dutton, Roll20 co-founder.

Lost Mine of Phandelver Available Now!

This partnership begins with the introductory adventure module Lost Mine of Phandelver, which is available today on the Marketplace.

Ideal for a group of 4 to 6 players, “Lost Mine of Phandelver” includes the entire adventure in a digitized format with 5 pre-generated characters, digital game tokens and maps, digital handouts for both Dungeon Masters and players, and the high-powered customization of the Roll20 interface.

More content will follow, including Wizards of the Coast’s latest upcoming adventure - Storm King’s Thunder.

This storyline is already available for pre-order now in the Roll20 Marketplace and will be available on launch date in Roll20 on September 6th, 2016.

A very special thanks and shoutout to moderator emeritus Kristin who contracted with us to make this first official D&D module– her contributions to the platform remain incredibly important and we’re looking forward to working more with her (and others!) in the coming months.

We hope you enjoy this great new way to play D&D and look forward to sharing more as this epic partnership blossoms!

Gen Con 2016 Yearbook

Here at Roll20, we take pride in our ability to provide a service that supports play from all over the world. We feel that working from home helps us provide this unique perspective and as a result, the staff spends a ton of time in text and video chat on a daily basis.

Occasionally, we are lucky enough to spend some quality time together in real life. This year, we were able to get the whole team together again at Gen Con 2016 and we wanted to share some of our favorite moments with you. Enjoy!

Riley Dutton, Co-Founder

My favorite memories were just hanging out together with the great folks that I work with every day but don’t get to see in person – the Roll20 team! We had lots of opportunity to play some great new games as well. Finally, at one point Richard and I were sitting at a bar and someone asked us if we worked for Roll20 (since we had t-shirts on). When we answered yes, he bought our drinks for us and thanked us profusely for helping him and his friends, who were in the military, keep in touch after they learned how much fun D&D could be while being deployed overseas. Knowing that we’re helping gaming groups like that keep in touch is why I love what I do!

Nolan T. Jones, Co-Founder

I really had a blast doing the Roll20 Marketplace panel. While I knew it would be fun going in, there would have been no way to predict it would end up as enlightening and uplifting as it did. Learning about how the various creators have waded through self doubt, collectively and individually pushed themselves to be better artists, and further really become a community was so radical. Thanks to Brass Badger, Russ, Devin, Rog, Joshua, and Samantha for coming and sharing with me. And shout out to Keith for attempting to learn the secret handshake.

Richard Zayas, Co-Founder

Sunday morning breakfast was the highlight for me. It was a great time to reflect on the trip and see everybody one last time before all the hassle of airport delays and con crud. While it’s always great to meet fans, industry celebs, and colleagues. Sometimes you just gotta dance with the one that brought you.

Steve Koontz, Programmer

The highlight of my Gen Con 2016 was the Advanced Roll20 panel. I got to spend an hour geeking out about my favorite tool for my favorite hobby. I got to share some of the pro-tips I’ve learned using and developing the Roll20 toolset over the last four years and even taught co-developer Phil B. a thing or two. I know I’m having a good time when the panel ended twenty minutes ago and we’re still in the hallway talking tabletop.

Suzanne Wallace, Brand Manager

I found it hugely exciting, supportive, and validating to rub elbows with amazing women in the gaming sphere. Just SOME of the magical ladies I got to hang out with during Gen Con were Meghan Dornbrock, Darcy Ross, Maddie Ray, Jayme Neverton, Samantha Darcy, Kat Kuhl, Senda Linaugh…I mean really, there were too many to name them all – and that’s the best part! Every time I ran into another woman who created art, ran a podcast, or made a game, I felt like we shared an instant connection, an understanding that we were all supercool gals and we should keep doing awesome stuff.

Adam Koebel, Games Master

Gen Con is one of those conventions that always seems a little overwhelming when I’m not there - there is so much to do and so many people to see that it can feel like you’re never going to get to do it all. When I get there, though, and I’m surrounded by all these excited faces, folks I’ve seen at a half dozen conventions past and new folks who are experiencing Gen Con for the first time, all that anxiety just slips away. I don’t play games as much as I used to at Gen Con (a byproduct of all the amazing games I get to run on Roll20 these days) so for me, the con is about reconnecting with folks I only see when we make the trip to Indianapolis. This year it was the fans - so many of y’all came to our panels or visited me at the booth or just gave me a high-five and a shoutout as we passed each other in the hall. Everyone who told me that they started a new campaign because of our Roll20 Presents series, or who reconnected with old friends after watching us play on YouTube - that’s what makes Gen Con go from huge and overwhelming to absolute magic.

Phil Behrenberg, Programmer

The most rewarding part for me was definitely getting to talk to a bunch of Roll20 players that all shared the same story I had when I subscribed several years ago. “My friends/I moved away, and if it wasn’t for Roll20 I would have been alone, with no one to game with. Then we found Roll20 and it was like nothing had changed. We continue to game just like we used to, only now through Roll20 instead of around the table.” Similarly to Riley’s experience above, this was especially touching to hear about friends that had gone into the military and are alone on the other side of the world, but still get to hang out with their best friends several times a month.

So that just leaves me…

Stephanie Powell, Community Manager

My memories certainly echo the rest of the team. Getting to see all of the folks I work with on a daily basis in real life is a very important part of our growth together. Gen Con is always an incredible experience and it is even more sweet when we get to meet members of our community at these events as well.

Big thanks to all of the amazing folks who we were lucky enough to chat with at Gen Con - if you attend this one or any other convention in the future, please always feel free to say hello to us!

Have a wonderful week and happy gaming!

Stephanie

The Orr Group Industry Report: Q2 2016

Another quarter of the year has gone by, and it’s time to take a look at what we’ve been playing on Roll20. Here’s the quick overview:

image

Once again, we’re thrilled to see watch our Player Sample Size grow even larger (this time by more than 6,000!) as our community expands. Thanks for joining us on Roll20!

In Q1, the number of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition games played on Roll20 increased by 4.05%. In Q2, games increased by 4.14%. 5E is still the most popular system on Roll20, with 51.05% of Players actively seeking campaigns using the most recent D&D system. Game activity in Pathfinder, 3.5 Edition, and 4th Edition once again saw a slight decrease.

Check out the full report from Q2 2016, below:

image

Call of Cthulhu saw more games this quarter, possibly due to the upcoming Call of Cthulhu video game, after the trailer was released at E3. A Song of Ice and Fire also bumped up, which is no surprise given that season 6 of Game of Thrones was airing at the same time – and Green Ronin Publishing announced a new adventure for the RPG setting in May.

We also suspect that Chaosium bringing Runequest back into print helped the game see a healthy increase in activity on Roll20. In addition, Tormenta, a Brazilian game which we added to The Orr Group Industry Report in Q1 when we saw increased activity in its character sheet, was played even more this last quarter.

Roll20 is pleased to announce that we have expanded our adventuring party once again, bringing on Kristin Carlson as our new Quality Assurance Manager.

Avid gamer, artist, and Let’s Play binge watcher – Kristin has been a recognizable face on the platform since Roll20 first launched its open beta back in 2012.

Within her first month as a moderator for the site, the Roll20 cofounders had her design the models for the application’s 3D Dice. From there she’s since created several tutorial video suites for the site’s wiki and hosted on YouTube, published two marketplace token packs, and has been responsible for several module conversions such as: Rite Publishing’s Adventure Quarterly #5, Monte Cook’s The Strange and The Strange: The Dark Spiral, and more recently, Wizards of the Coast’s Lost Mines of Phandelver and worked alongside James Introcaso for the upcoming Storm King’s Thunder release on Roll20.

Using her extensive knowledge of Roll20, her primary quest now is to seek out and destroy all of the Bugs that fall under her gaze, probably with lots of cleaving… Kristin prefers the barbarian approach.

Please join us in welcoming Kristin, the newest member of the Roll20 family!

In Regards to SoundCloud

Late last night Roll20’s access to the SoundCloud API was shut off. Roll20’s growth has caused SoundCloud more than once over the past four years to question as to whether or not our integration of their service was within the intent of their API; previously we have been grandfathered in for additional use when SoundCloud changed their API Terms of Use in June 2015.

We maintain that the Roll20 community added to the SoundCloud community– be it the vast amount of tracks that were tagged for “Roll20,” the specific music created for use in our interface, or simply our own pride in spurring the discovery of and credit for sound artists via the Roll20 Jukebox dashboard.

If you want to let SoundCloud know you’re disappointed by this decision, please respectfully do so. Particularly if you are a music artist that has uploaded to SoundCloud with the intent of sharing it via Roll20, we appreciate you contacting them to express your displeasure.

We have no expectation of our SoundCloud API access being restored, and as such will be exploring additional audio services to bring to Roll20 users. As things stand…

  • Live now for just over a year is the content Tabletop Audio. They continue to add new, long-form tracks that make or a great background to your adventures.
  • We have recently signed a deal with BattleBards to bring their music to Roll20, so look forward to that soon.
  • While it remains a popular suggestion, we are uncertain about utilizing YouTube-as-sound on Roll20, as YouTube’s API specifically prescribes against audio-only uses.
  • Given Roll20’s strong record of avoiding DMCA Takedown notices, we remain hesitant to allow direct audio uploads, as the potential for misuse is too great.

The Roll20 Jukebox’s access to the SoundCloud API has been a fantastic boon to the free users of both services. While we are not yet sure what our future audio plans are, we feel like this is a part of the community and experience that has for the time being fallen beneath our standards. Know that we’ll be working on solutions in the weeks to come.
